Stansted Airport Information

Stansted Airport is the UK's third largest airport, originally a Roman burial site from AD 100-200, the United States Army Air Force used the site as their war time base in 1942. They bulit one of the UK's longest runways which would later be essential in the airport's international development.

In 1946 the airport was handed over to the Air Ministry and the first chartered flights took place.

The USAAF returned in 1956 to strengthen and extend the runway for NATO, but it was never used by them. In 1966 the newly formed Airports Authority took control of Stansted.

June 5, 1985 after a public enquiry lasting 258 men the government gives permission for development to around 15 million passengers a year. On March 15, 1991 Her Majasty the Queen officially opens the new £400 million Stansted Airport.

In January 2000 works begins on Phase Two commences with plans to expand to cater for 25 million passengers a year.

January 9, 2003 Stansted agreed £30 million package of community benefits and enviromental safeguards.
